1.Vanquish (verb)
Meaning: defeat thoroughly.
synonyms: conquer, defeat (utterly), beat (hollow), trounce, annihilate,
triumph over, win a resounding victory over, be victorious over, best,
get the better of.
Example: The unprofessional behaviour of the young — perhaps even
well-meaning — Army Major in the Kashmir Valley is proof of how an
aggressive political establishment, and the ‘popular’ support it enjoys,
can transform the unlawful act into a nationalist issue. Otherwise,
how is it that pinning a civilian to the bonnet of a jeep as a grim
warning to the stone-pelting local population, reminiscent of what
conquering militaries often do in vanquished lands, becomes an act
worthy of praise?
Meaning: former.
synonyms: former, old, past, one-time, sometime, as was, ex-, late, then.
Example: No doubt, political and social change is inevitable in a
country with a multitude of sociopolitical realities, more so when the
erstwhile Congress system is being replaced with an equally overbearing,
but far more ideologically zealous, Hindutva system of things. But to
what end?
3.Pretension (noun) दावा
Meaning: 1.a claim or assertion of a claim to something.
synonyms: aspiration, claim, assertion, pretence, profession, purporting
Meaning: 2.the use of affectation to impress; pretentiousness.
synonyms: pretentiousness, affectation, affectedness, ostentation,
ostentatiousness, artificiality, attitudinizing, airs, posing,
posturing, showing off, hypocrisy, snobbery.
Example: We always had that dark side to our socio-political self: the
current political environment has merely enabled those dark forces to
unveil our pretensions of civilisational sanctimoniousness.
4.Unabashed (adjective) अविच्लित
Meaning: not embarrassed, disconcerted, or ashamed.
synonyms: unashamed, shameless, unembarrassed, brazen, audacious,
barefaced, blatant, flagrant, bold, bold as brass, confident, immodest,
unblushing, unrepentant, undaunted,
Example: There is a great deal more unabashed aggression and hostility
in the collective life of our nation today than ever before: the
language of aggression is unmissable, be it in our political discourse,
TV studios, passenger buses or marketplaces.
5.Aberration (noun) विपथन
plural noun: aberrations
a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically an unwelcome one.
"they described the outbreak of violence in the area as an aberration"
synonyms: anomaly, deviation, divergence, abnormality, irregularity, variation, digression, freak,
Example: There was a time we were ‘reasonably’ confident about the human
rights record of our country, despite the aberrations in Kashmir and
elsewhere, and would put up a genuine defence of it.
6.Onerous (adjective) कष्टदायक
Meaning: (of a task or responsibility) involving a great deal of effort, trouble, or difficulty.
synonyms: burdensome, heavy, inconvenient, troublesome, awkward, crushing, back-breaking.
Example: For instance, global insurers can hold up to 49% ownership in
Indian ventures but only if Indians retain management and control over
these entities — this is an onerous definition of control that has
inhibited deal-making.
7.Misconstrue (verb) गलत समझना
Meaning: interpret (a person's words or actions) wrongly.
synonyms: misunderstand, misinterpret, put a wrong interpretation on,
misconceive, misapprehend, mistake, misread, miss, confuse,
Example: After the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in Uttar Pradesh,
some commentators once again compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi
with Indira Gandhi as they had after the 2014 general election, perhaps
misconstruing their common trait of an authoritarian streak for
decisiveness.
8.Assiduously (adverb) परिश्रम से
Meaning: with great care and perseverance.
Example: Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister from a
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh background but he was accommodative, not
secular. While Nehru wanted a left-aligned India, Mr. Modi is working
assiduously to move it towards the right.
9.Mitigation (noun) शमन
Meaning: the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something.
Synonyms: alleviation, reduction, diminution, lessening, easing, weakening, lightening.
Example: The Accord deals with the global commitments of countries
regarding emissions, mitigation, adaptation and financing from 2020. The
allegation that China, Russia and India are only contributing to
pollution and not to climate change fund has no basis whatsoever.
10.Commensurate (adjective) अनुरूप
Meaning: corresponding in size or degree; in proportion.
Synonyms: equivalent, equal, corresponding, correspondent, comparable, proportionate.
Example: The advantage that the U.S. and other developed countries have
gained from the Paris Accord is that all economies, including China and
India, are being made to take action on climate change without any
commensurate guarantees from the former on funding and transfer of
technology
