1.Uncanny (adjective)=अलौकिक
Meaning: strange or mysterious, especially in an unsettling way.
Synonyms: eerie, unnatural, preternatural, supernatural, unearthly,
other-worldly, unreal, ghostly, mysterious, strange, abnormal, odd,
curious, queer, weird, bizarre.
Example: There is an uncanny similarity of argument between the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the All India Muslim Personal Law
Board (AIMPLB) on controversies that have to do with belief. This is
illustrated best in their respective positions on the Ram Setu and the
triple talaq debates.
2.Covenant (noun)=प्रसंविदा
Meaning: an agreement.
Synonyms: contract, compact, treaty, pact, accord, deal, bargain,
settlement, concordat, protocol, entente, agreement, arrangement,
understanding, pledge, promise.
Example: Belief is a matter of personal choice and no external
authority, whether state, cultural community or religious congregation,
can tell an individual what her beliefs should be. To do so is to
violate the individual’s freedom of conscience guaranteed by most
constitutional systems and human rights covenants.
3.Empirical (adjective)=प्रयोगसिद्ध
Meaning: based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.
Synonyms: observed, seen, factual, actual, real, verifiable, first-hand;
Example: In contrast, the ‘matters of faith’ which the RSS and the
AIMPLB are referring to — while they may look similar to ‘matters of
conscience’ — are not so for they are group, not individual, centric.
They have a component that is based on evidence, whether this is
textual, historical, or empirical.
4.Annul (verb)=निष्फल करना
Meaning: declare invalid (an official agreement, decision, or result).
synonyms: declare invalid, declare null and void, nullify, invalidate, void.
Example: The Bush administration declared North Korea part of the ‘axis
of evil’ in 2002, cancelled direct talks and annulled the 1994
agreement.
5.Oscillate (verb)=थरथराना
Meaning: move or swing back and forth in a regular rhythm.
synonyms: swing, sway, swing from side to side, swing back and forth, swing backwards and forwards, swing to and fro.
Example: U.S. policy has oscillated between sanctions in response to
nuclear and missile tests, dilution of sanctions by China, talks about
closer defence ties with Japan and South Korea, citing of additional
threats by North Korea and more testing, thus repeating the cycle. U.S.
expectations that sanctions would lead to regime collapse were misplaced
because given China’s stakes, this will not happen.
6.Abstention (noun)=मतदान न करना
Meaning: an instance of declining to vote for or against a proposal or motion.
Synonyms: refusal to vote, abstaining, non-voting.
Example: Yes, he won 66% of the vote but he did so with one of the
highest rates of abstention in recent history and a record number of
spoiled ballots. Even those who voted for him often did so by default in
order to prevent the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen, from winning.
7.Culminate (verb)=समापन
Meaning: reach a climax or point of highest development.
Synonyms: come to a climax, come to a crescendo, come to a head, reach a finale, peak, climax, reach a pinnacle;
Example: The enthusiasm with which government agencies and businesses
have embraced Aadhaar should prompt India’s foreign policy planners to
deploy it abroad. Executed properly, Aadhaar could become a central
pillar of India’s “neighbourhood first” policy, culminating in the
creation of a unique digital South Asian identity.
8.Commemoration (noun)=स्मरणोत्सव
Meaning: the action or fact of commemorating a dead person or past event.
Example: At 39, the pro-EU former investment banker will become France’s
youngest-ever President. On Monday, Mr. Macron laid the groundwork for
his transition to power, announcing a visit to Germany and a name change
for his political movement and appearing with his predecessor at a
solemn World War II commemoration, even as the focus shifted to the
challenges ahead for his administration.
9.Abrogate (verb)=अभिनिषेध करना
Meaning: repeal or do away with (a law, right, or formal agreement).
synonyms: repudiate, revoke, repeal, rescind, overturn, overrule,
override, do away with, annul, cancel, break off, invalidate, nullify,
void, negate, dissolve, countermand, veto, declare null and void,
discontinue;
Example: Justice Mathew concluded that the only limitation to the
amending power in the Constitution was that the Constitution could not
be repealed or abrogated in the exercise of the power of amendment
without substituting a mechanism by which the state was constituted and
organised — “that limitation flows from the language of the Article
(Article 368) itself.
10.Despotic (adjective)=निरंकुश
Meaning: of or typical of a despot; tyrannical.
synonyms: autocratic, dictatorial, totalitarian, authoritarian,
absolute, absolutist, arbitrary, unconstitutional, undemocratic,
anti-democratic, uncontrolled, unaccountable, summary.
Example: Article 329A as enacted had removed past, present and future
operations of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to election
disputes affecting the Prime Minister and Speaker, and despite the
absence of any applicable law it had (in effect) adjudicated the
election dispute between Raj Narain and Indira Gandhi. In so doing,
the amending body neither “ascertained the facts of the case” nor
“applied any norms for determining the validity of the election”, and
hence this was (according to Justice Mathew) plainly an exercise of
“despotic power” damaging the democratic structure of the Constitution.
