1. Intricate (adjective) : जटिल, पेचीदा
Meaning: very complicated or detailed.
Synonyms: complex, complicated, convoluted, tangled, entangled, ravelled, twisted, knotty, maze-like, labyrinthine, winding, serpentine, circuitous, sinuous.
Example: The recently-concluded 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was an intricately choreographed political theatre which showcased President Xi Jinping’s primacy, his vision and his status as the helmsman of the party and the nation.
2.Conclave (noun) : निर्वाचिका सभा, गुप्त सभा
Meaning: a private meeting.
Synonyms: (private) meeting, gathering, assembly, conference, convention, convocation, council, session, summit, forgathering
Example: While this conclave was more about reaffirmation of trends evolving since Mr. Xi’s ascendance to power at the 18th Party Congress, rather than charting out new policy directions, it has significant implications for India.
3.Supersede (verb) : अधिक्रमण करना, जगह लेना
Meaning: take the place of (a person or thing previously in authority or use); supplant.
Synonyms: replace, supplant, take the place of, take over from, substitute for, displace, oust, overthrow, remove.
Example: A Xinhua commentary gushingly suggests that “Xi Jinping’s thought will be China’s signature ideology and the new communism”, the implication being that it supersedes and encompasses the doctrinal offerings of previous leaders.
4.Eponymous (adjective) : नामस्रोत
Meaning: (of a person) giving their name to something, (of a thing) named after a particular person or group.
Example: Mr. Xi has become the only leader after Mao (with his “Mao Zedong Thought”) to have his eponymous ideological contribution written into the party charter while in office. “Deng Xiaoping Theory” was adopted after Deng’s death, and contributions of two of Mr. Xi’s predecessors, Hu Jintao (“Scientific Outlook”) and Jiang Zemin (“Three Represents”), are not named after them.
5.Dictum (noun) : उक्ति, अभ्युक्ति
Meaning: a formal pronouncement from an authoritative source.
Synonyms: pronouncement, proclamation, direction, injunction, assertion, statement.
Example: Mr. Xi has, however, taken decisive steps to move away from Deng’s legacy in four key areas: collective leadership; identification of successors well ahead of the transfer of power; a measure of differentiation between the party and the state; and the dictum of China biding its time, keeping a low profile and never claiming leadership.
6.Preoccupation (noun) : मानसनिक व्यस्तता
Meaning: the state or condition of being preoccupied or engrossed with something.
Synonyms: pensiveness, concentration, engrossment, absorption, self-absorption, musing, thinking, thinking of other things, deep thought, brown study, brooding.
Example: The preoccupation with building up global combat capabilities to safeguard China’s overseas interests also figures prominently in Mr. Xi’s vision. Arguably the most ambitious restructuring of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the last 50 years currently underway is focussed on joint command, power projection capability and the party’s control on the military.
7.Staunch (adjective) :निष्ठावान
Meaning: very loyal and committed in attitude.
Synonyms: stalwart, loyal, faithful, trusty, committed, devoted, dedicated, dependable, reliable, steady, constant, hard-working, vigorous, stable, firm, steadfast, redoubtable, resolute, unswerving, unwavering, unhesitating, unfaltering.
Example: At a time when some world leaders strain to hide their disdain for U.S. President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has become Mr. Trump’s golfing buddy, phone friend and staunch supporter.
8.Itinerary (noun) : यात्रा कार्यक्रम, भ्रमण संबंधी
Meaning: a planned route or journey, a travel document recording a route or journey.
Synonyms: planned route, route, journey, way, road, path, course.
Example: His itinerary includes meetings with the Emperor and Piko-Taro, the singer of the viral ditty, “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen”. But the significance of the visit lies elsewhere.
9.Articulated (adjective) : दो या अधिक खंड एक लचीला संयुक्त से जुड़े होना
Meaning: having two or more sections connected by a flexible joint.
Synonyms: hinged, jointed, segmented.
Example: Mr. Trump has thus far lacked a clearly articulated Asia policy. How he plans to replace, or renew, the “pivot” to Asia, a cornerstone of his predecessor Barak Obama’s foreign policy, remains unclear.
10.Coherent (adjective) : सुसंगत
Meaning: (of an argument, theory, or policy) logical and consistent, forming a unified whole.
Synonyms: logical, reasoned, reasonable, well reasoned, rational, sound, cogent.
Example: This visit provides an opportunity for a coherent exposition of what the U.S. intends for the region. But it needs to be watched most of all for indications of how far Mr. Abe is willing, and able, to guide Mr. Trump’s policies in Asia.
